Universal Design & Modifications is the latest design concept for the homes of tomorrow. The "Baby Boomer" generation is aging. Medical advances have drastically increased our life span over the last 50 years. More and more people are living longer active lives despite severe disabilities. The need to make accessibility accommodations in private homes is inevitable. Generally the home a person resides in by the time they turn 50 is the home they want to stay in for the rest of their life. People work hard to achieve the home of their dreams and the desire to "age in place" is greater than ever. With Universal Design your home can maintain the look and style that fits your taste but have the functionality that is needed to accommodate you at any stage in your life. Building or modifying a home with the Universal Design features reduces the hazards and inconvenience average design features subject. Common features of Universal Design are wider hall ways and doors, self closing doors, lower countertops; pull out draws and shelving and allowing more passing space between areas of the home. The wonderful part is that these features can fit seamlessly into every home style without appearing industrial or hospital like. A smart home design that includes features that can be adapted does not have to cost any more than it would otherwise. It’s just a different way of doing things. Many home today already have unintended elements of accessible design. When it comes to selling homes, those that appeal to more buyers sell faster and at better prices. Young healthy people are not the only ones who want to buy homes. Universal Design is not just for the elderly or those with disabilities. It is designed for everyone, young and old, able bodied or otherwise. Anyone who has had the experience of bringing an ailing loved one into their average designed home knows the frustrations that arise when confronted with trying to accommodate for things like wheelchairs or walkers, hospital beds and medical equipment. Simple modifications like wider doors, zero entry bathroom showers, grab bars and wheelchair ramps are just a few accessibility modifications that can make the difference in a person’s safety at home. Other modifications such as blinking doorbells and hazard detectors, lower light switches and removal of round door knobs are just a few things that can make life in a home easier for everyone. Ensure your ability to enjoy your home's comforting surroundings by making the right modifications now. Think about the future. A smart home design that includes features that can be adapted does not have to cost any more than it would otherwise. It’s just a different way of doing things. Building your home with the Universal Design in mind only promises that your home will last a lifetime.
